Walk the path of a
Bestseller

With the eagerly awaited release of The Salt Path, the film adaptation of Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir, audiences will soon be immersed in a deeply moving story of resilience, love, and the healing power of nature. For guests at The Barnstaple Hotel, this tale is more than a cinematic experience, it’s a journey that begins just a short drive from our door.

The Salt Path chronicles the true story of Raynor and Moth Winn, a couple who, after losing their home and facing a devastating medical diagnosis, decide to walk the entire 630-mile South West Coast Path. What starts as an act of survival transforms into a powerful odyssey of self-discovery and connection with the land.

This iconic trail winds through some of the UK’s most extraordinary landscapes and cultural treasures, including one National Park, five National Landscapes, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Each step offers a new perspective, not only on nature, but on what it means to live fully.

Salt Path Stops Near Barnstaple Hotel

Lynton & Lynmouth and the Valley of Rocks (Approx. 50 mins)

Where Exmoor meets the sea, the Valley of Rocks is one of the most dramatic stretches of the North Devon coastline. Jagged cliffs, wild goats, and sweeping sea views create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly, perfectly capturing the solitude and awe central to The Salt Path.

Clovelly (Approx. 35 mins)

This car-free, historic village clings to the cliffs above the sea and is famed for its cobbled streets and fishing heritage. Raynor and Moth passed through here, and it remains one of the most atmospheric and memorable stops on the coastal path.

Hartland Quay (Approx. 50 mins)

Remote and rugged, Hartland Quay showcases the untamed nature of the North Devon coastline. Towering cliffs and crashing waves make it a dramatic backdrop, echoing the challenges faced on the Salt Path walk.

Combe Martin (Approx. 40 mins)

This charming coastal village offers access to some steep, rewarding sections of the path with spectacular views. It’s an ideal location for walkers wanting to feel the physicality of the route while enjoying peaceful surroundings.

Woolacombe (Approx. 30 mins)

Vast sandy beaches and rolling dunes define Woolacombe, a perfect spot for long, contemplative walks. Just like Raynor and Moth, you can experience the therapeutic rhythm of waves and footsteps here.

Braunton Barrows (Approx. 20 mins)

This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is one of the largest sand dune systems in the UK, rich with wildlife and a truly unique walking experience. The ever-changing landscape reflects the unpredictability and beauty of the path.

Saunton Sands (Approx. 25 minutes)

Endless sand, towering dunes, and open skies, Saunton Sands is a place to walk, reflect, and breathe deeply. It’s easy to see why this kind of terrain offered Raynor and Moth so much mental and emotional space.

Ilfracombe (Approx. 40 mins)

Known for its dramatic coastline and artistic flair, Ilfracombe offers both cultural charm and stunning cliffside walks. Hike to the Torrs or enjoy the harbour atmosphere, where modern life and wild nature meet.
